We had the pleasure of restoring the exterior of this beautiful custom home by completely replacing its aging cedar resawn shakes. Our goal was to preserve the home’s distinctive character while upgrading the exterior with a stronger, better-ventilated wall system designed for long-term performance in the Pacific Northwest climate.

We carefully removed the existing cedar shakes and old weather-resistant house membrane, allowing us to inspect and properly prepare the underlying exterior before beginning the new installation. A new protective house membrane was then installed to help prevent moisture from reaching the wall assembly.

Over the membrane, we installed a high-performance MortairVent rainscreen ventilation system. This system creates a drainage and airflow space behind the cedar shakes, allowing trapped moisture to drain and the wall assembly to dry more effectively. Improved ventilation helps reduce the risk of moisture buildup, mold, and premature deterioration.

The home was then finished with new cedar resawn shakes, carefully installed to maintain consistent courses and complement its original architectural character. The completed project brought the exterior back to life while providing a more durable, breathable, and weather-resistant siding system.
